Achieving 4 wins in 5 matches the “14 de Julio” team won the crown in the Western Zone of the Baseball Sugar League, by defeating the Abraham Lincoln team, representing Havana.
After a couple wins and a loss as visitors, the Cienfuegos team took advantage of its condition of local to complete the harvest and winning the pass to the tournament´s great final. The ultimate game was worthy of a Play Off condition and both teams showed courage and devotion on the field in order to achieve victory. The final score 7-6 proves tightness of the match. Unfortunately, nothing is perfect and a wrong referee decision, revoked after referee meeting, blurred the result and made the visiting team play under protest. Nevertheless, those who attended the game enjoyed an excellent show, and for their joy, our selection won the expected objective.
“This is the result of a lot of sacrifice an endeavor- tells Miguel Ángel Acea, team manager- The boys have proved all they achieved in long training sessions. This began last May in the provincial championship, and we have made it to the national final. Being honest, we have gone beyond my expectations and now we can be considered as dangerous to any rival”.
Active Yoandry Moya, known by the Cienfuegos fans due to his performance in several National Series, plays as team captain. “I must confess this is one of the greatest joys in my life. Since the beginning we aimed for winning the daily game and becoming leaders of the Central Zone, which we fought for vs. Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus teams. Once achieved this objective we decided to aim bigger, since we got convinced that we could fight for the title within the Western Zone. And as you can see, that goal became reality as well. Now we go for all, the National Champion trophy.
Maykel Antúnez is one of the engines of the team, both from the batting area and the center field. “I´m proud of being part of this team; we are one big family and we support each other all the time. I’m sure we can make it and bring the trophy to Cienfuegos.
It is indispensable Eduardo la Rosa s opinion, director of 14 de Julio Sugar Enterprise. “Every year enthusiasm gets bigger. It is not only us as officials who are proud, but also all the workers. Remember that these baseball players are the ones that in a few days will face the sugar harvest; the same who have being part of sugar sewing and all sorts of tasks; the same who give their best every day to foster our economy. Realizing that they could become national champions is really exciting and moving.
Next December 15th, our team will travel east, since two days later the Sugar League final will begin.
